Robotics in Total Knee Arthroplasty

Conventional total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has been the gold standard for end-stage osteoarthritis patients. There is increased interest in robotic technology utilization for arthroplasty surgery to improve surgical precision and patient outcomes. In recent years, several companies have introduced a range of robotic systems that assist orthopedic surgeons to varying degrees in performing TKA. This review aims to analyze the current literature on the utilization of robotic systems for TKA surgery to provide an overview of its utilization for patients and surgeons and evaluate its outcomes and cost-effectiveness. Despite the promising findings reported in the literature on robotic-assisted TKA (RATKA), the actual long-term value of RATKA versus conventional TKA remains in question.

Lateral Ankle Instability:

Review of the Diagnosis & Treatment

Ankle sprains are common injuries that can progress into chronic lateral ankle instability (CLAI). Definitive diagnosis and optimal treatment of CLAI are still controversial. Multiple studies have been conducted to better understand the anatomy and underlying pathophysiology of CLAI. History and physical examination are essential tools in the diagnosis of CLAI. Further imaging studies, including stress views, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and ultrasound, can aid in diagnosis if the physical examination findings are vague. Conservative treatment is often successful in the acute setting and can also be considered the first line of treatment in CLAI. Anatomic and nonanatomic procedures are described in the treatment of CLAI. Open anatomic repair with the Broström-Gould procedure seems to be the gold standard technique. Arthroscopic intervention emerged in the last decade, but there is still not enough evidence to support this procedure over the open Broström-Gould procedure. This review article aimed to summarize the diagnostic methodology and treatment options for CLAI.

With the global surgical robotics market projected to reach $7.42 billion by 2030, the integration of these systems in orthopaedic practice has expanded significantly. Robotic platforms vary in design, functionality, and level of automation, offering advantages such as improved anatomical accuracy and reduced intraoperative variability. This review evaluates recent advancements in robotic-assisted orthopaedic surgery, comparing different platforms, their clinical benefits, and their impact on surgical workflows.

Congenital Muscular Torticollis:

A Current Concept Review

Torticollis is often characterized by a unilateral head tilt and rotation of the chin to the opposite side. This pathology is believed to arise from contracted, shortened, or deformed sternocleidomastoid muscle. However, torticollis is not a formal diagnosis but is clinically viewed as a sequela of many other conditions. Torticollis can be categorized as acquired or congenital; the latter presents clinically shortly after birth, while acquired torticollis presents at any age. For this article’s purpose, we will focus on relevant clinical approaches to Congenital Muscular Torticollis (CMT). The early diagnosis and treatment of CMT lead to a better prognosis. The surgical interventions in the literature, such as the release of the sternocleidomastoid and z-lengthening, are still controversial in their outcomes. Therefore, this review will evaluate the data on operative and non-operative treatments of CMT to provide insight on how to improve patient outcomes.

Acute Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Secondary to Reactive Tenosynovitis Following a Cat Bite: Case Report

A 76-year-old male developed acute carpal tunnel syndrome (ACTS) due to reactive tenosynovitis and lymphangitis after a cat bite on his thumb. Non-operative treatment failed, leading to worsening pain, swelling, and paresthesia, requiring surgery. Exploration revealed pyogenic swelling and tenosynovitis in the flexor carpi radialis sheath and Space of Parona. Serous fluid was drained, and antibiotics were administered. The patient experienced significant pain reduction and regained full hand function after occupational therapy. This case highlights the importance of early recognition and intervention, especially in atypical CTS presentations, as timely surgical decompression can prevent long-term nerve damage.
